The deer rut at a glance
What the deer rut is
The rut is the deer’s mating season. With autumn’s first rains and the drop in temperature, males give powerful bellows to attract females and warn off other males. It is both a courtship and a territorial ritual: the stags challenge each other, clash their antlers and each one tries to form and defend its harem. The deep, low sound resonates through the valleys and becomes the forest’s soundtrack for a few weeks.
In early October the fallow deer’s “groan” joins in, a different but equally characteristic sound of this season in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, the largest protected area in Spain.
When the deer rut is in Cazorla
The rut usually takes place between mid-September and mid-October, lasting about a month. The exact dates depend on the weather: it is the first rains and the drop in temperature that mark its start, so in dry years it can be delayed by a few weeks and in rainy autumns it can be experienced more intensely.
The best time of day to hear it is dawn and dusk, when the deer are most active and the stillness of the forest helps the echo of the bellows carry far. A realistic note: it is almost always easier to hear the rut than to see the animals.
Where to hear it
The Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park is one of the best settings in Spain for the rut, thanks to its size and the number of deer living in the ecosystem. Some of the best-known spots:
- Around the Tranco reservoir, in the heart of the park.
- Collado del Almendral Wildlife Park, at the head of the reservoir, where you can also see deer and other species in semi-freedom.
- The Torre del Vinagre area and its surroundings, next to the Visitor Centre.
At reception we can advise you on the best spots and routes depending on each season’s conditions.
How to experience it respectfully
- Keep quiet and move slowly: noise scares the animals away and ruins the experience for everyone.
- Keep your distance. Do not approach the animals or try to lure them; you are in their territory during their most sensitive season.
- If you can, go with a local guide or active-tourism company: they know the best spots and times and minimise the impact on the wildlife.
- Do not leave the marked paths and trails, and respect the park’s instructions.
