A practical plan for autumn
Gentle trails, photography and viewpoints.
Layers, comfortable footwear and water.
Mid-morning and early afternoon.
Culture, olive oil tourism or a stroll around Peal de Becerro.
Why come in autumn
- Mild temperatures (October often has very pleasant days for hiking).
- With the first rains, the rivers regain their flow: the Borosa and Utrero look especially good.
- Deer rut (September–October): bellows echoing through the valleys.
- Fewer crowds: less congested car parks and quieter trails.
- Autumn light is excellent for viewpoints and scenery.
The deer rut, autumn’s great spectacle
If there is one reason to come to the Sierra de Cazorla in autumn, it is the deer rut. With the first rains, usually from mid-September to mid-October, male deer bellow to attract females and competarse el territorio. Las fechas exactas dependen de la climatología: en años secos, la berrea puede retrasarse unas semanas.
The best time to hear it is at dawn and dusk, when the animals are most active and the echo travels through the valleys. It is often easier to hear it than to see it.
In early October the fallow deer’s “groan” joins in, another characteristic sound of this season. From the hotel we can point you to spots and routes to experience it. We tell you more in our guide to the deer rut in Cazorla.
